ABSTRACT
The
kinetics of the reaction between SCN- and Co2(OH)2(C2O4)44-
have been measured in aqueous acidic perchlorate solution
spectrophotometrically. The reaction is second order overall, first
order in each reactant; with a stoichiometry of 1: 2 (oxidant :
reductant). Observed rate constants are independent of acidity but
free radicals are observed as intermediate in this reaction. The
reaction is not catalysed by ions and appears to proceed
predominantly by an outer sphere electron transfer mechanism.
Although thiocyanogen is indicated as one of the reaction products,
it is readily hydrolysed in aqueous solution to cyanate and sulphate
ions.
Keywords:
oxidation, thiocyanate, binuclear cobaltate(III), electron transfer.
