Abstract:- Kinetic investigation on Ru(III) catalyzed oxidation of cyclopentanol and cyclohexanol by acidified solution of sodium  periodate in the presence of mercuric acetate as a scavenger have been made in the temperature range of 30-450C. The rate shows first order kinetics both in substrate and Ru(III), while order of reaction is zero with respect to periodate and hydrogen ions. Insignificant influence of mercuric acetate and ionic strength of the medium was observed, while the reaction showed negligible effect of [Cl-] on the reaction rate. A transient complex, formed between Ru(III) and cyclic alcohol in a slow and rate determining step, react with periodate to give the product in a fast step, which leads to regeneration of the catalyst. D2O had insignificant effect on the rate of the reaction. A suitable mechanism in conformity with the kinetic observations has been proposed and the thermodynamic parameters computed.
