ABSTRACT
A simple and sensitive
spectrophotometric method has been developed for determination of
thorium (IV) using newly synthesized
3-methoxysalcilaldehyde-4-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone (MSHBH) reagent in
a micellar medium of Triton X -100 (neutral surfactant). Thorium
(IV) forms a yellow coloured water soluble complex with the reagent
in acidic buffer medium pH 4.25. Beer’s law obeyed in the range
0.232 to 4.641 μg/ml of Th (IV) λmax at 394 nm. The molar
absorptivity and Sandell’s sensitivity of coloured species are 2.0 x
104 l.mol-1.cm-1 and 0.012 μg/cm2 respectively. Thorium (IV) forms
(M: L) 1:1 complex and stability constant of the complex is 1.95 x
105. The developed derivative spectrophotometric method was employed
for the determination of thorium (IV) in monazite sand.
