Abstract: Vapour phase N-alkylation of aniline with ethanol has been carried out over Cd1-xCrxFe2O4 (x = 0,0.25,0.50,0.75 and 1.0) type ferrospinels prepared via. low temperature co-precipitation method. N-Ethylaniline (NEA) and N, N-Diethylaniline (NNDEA) were found to be the major products. Yield and selectivity for NEA and NNDEA depends on ‘x’ values and it has been observed that system possessing low ‘x’ values were highly selective for NEA. A maximum yield with selectivity of 57.6% and 1.9% for NEA, 96.2% and 3.2% for NNDEA, respectively, was observed under optimized conditions. Catalyst characterization was made by XRD, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD and BET-SA methods. Lewis acid sites of catalyst are mainly responsible for good catalytic activities. Cation distribution in the spinel structure influences the acido-basic properties of catalysts. XRD was used to establish phase purity and ferrite structure. IR band observed around 700 and 500 cm-1 are respectively attributed due to tetrahedral and octahedral metal-oxygen stretching mode of the spinels. Cd/Cr ionic composition acidity and basicity of spinels were used to evaluate the results.
