Abstract:  The crude extract of the seeds of Turraeanthus africanus has been observed to have 100% toxicity on tadpoles. Phytochemical screening gave positive tests for limonoids, steroids, triterpenes, saponins and tannins in the seed extracts. Similar result excluding tannins was obtained for the leaves extract. Column chromatography followed by preparative TLC afforded a pure isolate compound I which showed toxicity effect on nymphs and also showed positive in vitro cytotoxic/cytostatic effect on the growth of cancer cells. Moreover, the petroleum-ether, chloroform and methanol:chroroform mixture (1:1) extracts of the leaves inhibited significantly the growth of staphylococcus aureus but were inactive on pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.

Keywords: Phytochemical screening, Turraeanthus africanus, staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli.
