Abstract. The photocatalytic degradation of alizarin red S by using coprecipited NiS-ZnS in 1:5 ratio has been studied. Coprecipitation method used for preparing NiS-ZnS. The effect of operational parameters, i.e. pH of the solution, photocatalyst content, initial dye concentration and effect of light intensities on the rate of photocatalytic process has been examined for both NiS-ZnS and pure ZnS for a comparative study. Result obtained is revealed that Coprecipited NiS-ZnS showed high activity for photocatalytic degradation of alizarin red S. The Photodegradation follows a pseudo-first-order degradation. A tentative mechanism has been proposed for photocatalytic bleaching of dyes.
