Abstract:
Paraformaldehyde and Jatropha curcas oil, a triglyceride were
reacted in the presence of a Lewis acid, borontrifluoride
etherate and the hydroxymethylated Jatropha curcas oils were
obtained at 62% yield. The hydroxymethylated Jatropha curcas oil
were reacted with maleic anhydride at 1000C and
acryloyl chloride at 00C to produce the maleate half
esters and acrylate esters respectively. Characterisation of the
new modified oils and products were done by Fourier transform
Infrared, 1H NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry
as well as by physicochemical methods.
Keywords: Synthesis, maleinised hydroxymethylated, acrylated
hydroxymethylated, Jatropha curcas oil.
